Memory mode
Each zombie's word shows for a moment as it walks out of the fog, then vanishes. Type it from memory before the zombie reaches your truck.
How it works
Memory is played in levels, like Endless: each one is about thirty seconds of driving, the words get longer as you go, and every third level ends at a rest stop where the truck refuels and gets patched up. Zombies come one at a time, but they don't wait for you, so soon you are holding a few words in your head at once. As you type, the letters you have got right stay visible over the zombie, so you can see how far through the word you are.
The cast is smaller than in the other modes: walkers from the start, brutes from level 2 and runners from level 3. There are no bombers, frenzies, splitters, hordes or boss, so the challenge is remembering rather than reacting.
Word time
In Memory, the Garage's difficulty row becomes Word time: how long each word stays on screen before it fades.
- Practice: 1.5 seconds, and the truck can't be damaged.
- Relaxed: 0.8 seconds.
- Normal: 0.4 seconds.
- Intense: 0.2 seconds.
Each level the time gets a little shorter, to about 70 percent by level 10, and long words stay up slightly longer. Normal and Intense also keep more words waiting on the road at once.
Wrong letters and peeks
A wrong letter brings the word back for about a second: a peek. A peek resets your combo, so it pays to be sure before you type. A word typed from memory, with no peek, scores extra.
Survivors and crates
Survivors' names and the words on supply crates never fade, so rescues and crates work just as they do in the other modes.
Your results
Every five words in a row typed from memory, a cheer shows at the top of the screen, with a new one as the streak grows. At the end of a run, the results show how many words you remembered, your perfect recalls, the longest word you remembered and how many peeks you took. There is no words-per-minute figure here, and Memory keeps its own board of best runs.
Tips for remembering
- Read the whole word in one look rather than letter by letter.
- Say it to yourself as it appears, so you are holding a sound as well as a picture.
- Split a long word into two parts, such as "lan" and "tern", and remember the parts.
- Start typing as soon as the word appears, while it is still fresh.
- Start on the Practice word time, and shorten it as the words start to stick.
Who it suits
Memory suits confident typists who know where the keys are and want a different kind of challenge. On the Practice word time, with the truck safe from damage, it is also a gentle way in for anyone curious.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see a word again after it fades?
Yes. Type a wrong letter and the word comes back for about a second. It costs your combo, though.
Does Memory have hordes or a boss?
No. Zombies come one at a time, and there are no hordes, bombers, frenzies, splitters or boss.
Can the truck be damaged in Memory?
Yes, on every word time except Practice. The run ends when its five health bars are gone.
Do I earn coins in Memory?
Yes, as in Endless. The Practice word time earns none.
