Typing on a phone
Typing on a touch screen is a different skill from typing on a keyboard, but the same idea applies: accuracy first, then speed.
Tips for touch screens
- Use both thumbs. Hold the phone in both hands and let each thumb cover its own half of the keyboard.
- Hold it upright and steady. Rest your elbows or the backs of your hands on something if you can.
- Aim for the middle of each key. Most mistakes on a phone come from hitting the edge of a key.
- Find a rhythm. Even, unhurried taps beat fast bursts followed by corrections.
- Glance at the word, not your thumbs. With practice your thumbs learn where the letters are.
Practising in Zomtype
On a phone, Zomtype plays upright with its own on-screen keyboard under the road. As you tap a key, its letter pops up above your thumb, so you can see what you pressed. A physical keyboard is still the best way to build proper touch typing, so practise on both if you can.
